Madrid/The cultural space The Tertulia dedicates its next edition in Madrid to a selection of independent audiovisuals made between 2015 and 2024. Curated and moderated by the Cuban journalist and film critic Antonio Enrique González Rojas, the exhibition Free forms in contemporary Cuban cinema proposes a tour of six works of fiction, documentary, mockumentary, video essay and video art that address the reality of the island through the tensions of the diaspora, intimate memory, censorship and creation outside of state institutions.
This event is organized by The Tertulia and coordinated by Rafael Vilches Proenza, Rigoberto Carceller, Francis Sánchez and Ileana Álvarez.
Works in program:
Fog Diary (2015), by Rafael Ramírez: A science fiction mockumentary that reflects on the reconstruction and manipulation of memory based on supposed archives found from an imploded city.
The son of the dream (2016), by Alejandro Alonso: Filmed in 16 mm, this documentary rescues the story of an uncle of the director who emigrated during the Mariel exodus due to discrimination due to his sexual orientation.
The deaths of Aristides (2019), by Lázaro Lemus: Animated documentary about the death of a young man from a gunshot during Compulsory Military Service in 1991, breaking institutional silences.
Petrichor (2022), by Violena Ampudia: A Cuban-Belgian co-production that explores, from a sensory and domestic perspective, the uprooting of emigration through the care of plants.
Kill a man (2024), by Orlando Mora: Work of fiction that suffered strong censorship and political exclusion by the authorities and official exhibition circuits in Cuba.
Control of changes (2024), by Hanzer González Garriga: Video art piece based on a 1982 postcard about the use of gas masks, which analyzes children’s political indoctrination and the pedagogy of fear on the island.
