European Commissioner Marta Kos also congratulated Janša on her election
European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos congratulated the new Prime Minister Janez Janša on his election and expressed her belief that Slovenia will continue to be a firm supporter of the expansion of the European Union, which remains one of the key strategic tasks for the future of the continent, the commissioner’s office confirmed today.
SDS President Janša was elected as the new Prime Minister in the National Assembly on Friday, and after his election there were already congratulations from the EU’s highest political representatives.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she is looking forward to cooperation in solving common challenges. He was also congratulated by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, as well as the head of the political group of the European People’s Party (EPP), of which SDS is also a member, Manfred Weber.
Kosova, who comes from the liberal Renew political family, has been accused by SDS of cooperating with the former Yugoslav secret service Udba, and in early May, Janša wrote on the X social network that the commissioner was “caught in a big lie in the European Parliament, where she denied it, and therefore she will have to resign or be replaced”.
The governments of individual countries do not have formal powers to replace commissioners.
Janša published the note during her visit to Kosovo in Ljubljana, where she also met with outgoing Prime Minister Robert Golob, and after the March publication of historian Igor Omerza’s book entitled Komisarka. In it, the author states, among other things, that Kosova cooperated with the Yugoslav secret police, Udba, or the State Security Service (SDV), and he also published several documents that were supposed to prove the accusations.
On Friday, Von der Leynova, in response to the questions of the Slovenian MEP Romana Tomc (EPP/SDS), about how the commission will act, announced that Brussels will not re-examine the accusations against Kosovo regarding its alleged cooperation with the former Yugoslav secret service. Kosova, as a candidate for commissioner, rejected these accusations during a hearing in the European Parliament in November 2024.
