The Dominica Watersports Association (DWA) met on August 11, 2026, to address major issues affecting the watersports industry and to set priorities for strengthening the sector ahead of the 2026/2027 season and beyond.
A key focus of the meeting was the need for clearer, more transparent regulations governing watersports operations in Dominica. Participants highlighted gaps and uncertainties in the current governance framework, including the Sperm Whale Reserve Act, 2025. They also emphasized the importance of having a well-documented and streamlined licensing and approval process for new watersports operators—one that meets local requirements and aligns with internationally recognized industry standards.
DWA President Mr. William Lawrence, Manager of Fort Young Dive, expressed confidence in the Association’s long-standing experience and industry network. He stressed that stronger collaboration among government agencies, industry stakeholders, and regional partners is essential to create more transparent and efficient processes that support both existing and prospective operators.
The DWA will also pursue increased dialogue and clarity around implementation of the Sperm Whale Reserve management framework. While recognizing the importance of protecting Dominica’s marine environment, the DWA believes operators must have clear guidance on regulations, rights, responsibilities, and operating procedures within the Reserve.
The Association further aims to improve communication, monitoring, and compliance systems that support conservation while ensuring the long-term sustainability of Dominica’s watersports industry.
Following the meeting, DWA Secretary Shanese Daway of IslandStyle Fishing said, “The work has now begun.”
The DWA remains committed to strengthening partnerships, addressing regulatory gaps, and supporting a professional, competitive, and environmentally responsible watersports sector for generations to come.
