The Dominica Business Forum Inc. has praised the level of civility and professionalism displayed during its recent public discussion featuring candidates contesting the Roseau Central by-election, describing the event as a model for future political engagement in Dominica.
In a press release issued on July 27, the organization expressed gratitude to broadcast journalists Kaywana Fontaine Wilson and Mathias Peltier Jr., as well as Dominica Labour Party candidate Ashma McDougall, United Workers Party candidate Danny Lugay, and independent candidate Sherman Boston for participating in the public discussion held at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital on Wednesday, July 29. The forum also thanked members of the public for their participation and support.
According to the Dominica Business Forum, feedback from attendees and online viewers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing support for similar discussions to be held in the future.
The organization also commended DBS Radio and Dominica News Online for broadcasting and livestreaming the event, enabling audiences in Dominica and abroad to follow the proceedings.
The Business Forum said it was satisfied that the discussion met its principal objective of bringing together political representatives from different parties and perspectives to engage on issues of national importance.
It noted that the respectful and professional manner in which the candidates conducted themselves demonstrated the educational value of constructive political dialogue and could serve as a benchmark for future engagement among those seeking public office.
Despite the event’s success, the organization expressed disappointment at the low turnout of young people, saying it was concerned that many young voters missed an opportunity to witness politicians with differing viewpoints discuss issues affecting the country’s future.
The forum suggested that greater youth participation in similar events would help encourage informed civic engagement and strengthen democratic discourse.
Established in December 2012, the Dominica Business Forum Inc. is a registered non-profit umbrella organization representing numerous Business Service Organizations across Dominica. The organization emphasized that it is politically neutral and non-partisan, engaging with all national stakeholders solely in the interest of promoting the country’s economic development.
