    Treatment offer: According to the document from the Ministry of Health and Social Protection entitled “Health in figures”, Morocco has 1 doctor (public and private sector) for 1,156 inhabitants in 2024. The ministry’s data shows 277,520 surgical interventions in public hospitals, or 117 interventions per doctor. The details.

    The Department of Health and Social Protection has published its annual Health in Figures document. It presents a summary of data and statistics on the national health system in 2024, in particular on the provision of public and private health care and the production of public health establishments at the national, regional and provincial/prefectural levels. Regarding health resource indicators, the document indicates that Morocco has 1 doctor (public and private sector) per 1,156 inhabitants in 2024. Ministry data shows 2,514 inhabitants per doctor in the public sector. As for the private sector, there is 1 doctor for 2,140 inhabitants. The percentage of specialist doctors in the public sector is 77% compared to 65% in the private sector. Ministry figures show 12,016 inhabitants per primary health care establishment. In the public sector, there are 1,307 inhabitants per hospital bed. Regarding the hospital network, statistics reveal 2.45 beds per doctor. As for nursing staff in the public sector, there is 1 nurse per 918 inhabitants. In the public sector, Morocco has a total of 14,667 doctors including 3,388 general practitioners and 11,259 specialist doctors. There are 560 dental surgeons in the public sector and 245 pharmacists. Furthermore, the public sector has 18,147 multi-skilled nurses and 6,527 midwives.

    Increase in life expectancy and decrease in mortality

    Regarding socio-demographic indicators, the document indicates that life expectancy at birth has increased in Morocco, reaching 77.2 years at the national level. This is 75.5 years for men compared to 79 years for women.
    Note that men and women have a higher life expectancy in urban areas (78.8 years compared to 73.9 years). This gain is the result of the reduction in mortality in different age groups as well as the improvement in living and health conditions. The total fertility index is 1.97 at the national level. In rural areas, it stood at 2.37 compared to 1.77 in urban areas. The average annual population growth rate between 2014 and 2024 stood at 0.85. For its part, the infant mortality rate is 18 deaths per 1,000 births. As for the maternal mortality rate, it is 72.6 per 100,000 live births (44.6 per 100,000 births in urban areas compared to 111.1 in rural areas).

    277,520 surgical interventions in public hospitals

    Regarding the production indicators of public hospitals, the existing litter capacity is 28,184 and the functional litter capacity is 22,874 in 2024. The number of admissions to public hospitals was 1,282,403 and the number of hospitalization days is 4,143,763. As for the number of surgical interventions, they amounted to 277,520. Note that the average number of external specialist consultations is 438 per doctor. Among other indicators, it should be noted that the average occupancy rate in public hospitals is 54.6%, the average length of stay is 3.2 days and the number of surgical interventions per doctor amounts to 117.

    More than 292,000 deliveries

    The delivery rate in public health facilities is 51.2% (75.4% in rural areas and 35.8% in urban areas).
    Note that 242,835 deliveries took place in hospital maternity wards and 49,707 in birthing centers. The ministry specifies that delivery by cesarean section represents 8%. The percentage of pregnant women receiving prenatal care by qualified personnel is 64.5%. It is 76.7% in rural areas compared to 56.7% in urban areas. The number of women having been consulted postpartum is 577,513 nationally in 2024, including 39% in rural areas (227,296) and 61% in urban areas (350,217). The number of newborns who consulted postpartum amounts to 540,607 nationally, including 213,540 in rural areas and 327,097 in urban areas.

    Notifiable diseases

    Regarding indicators relating to notifiable diseases, the ministry’s figures show 33,036 cases of tuberculosis in 2024, 205 cases of whooping cough, 10 cases of tetanus, 5,402 cases of measles, 276 cases of meningitis, 556 cases of AIDS, 1,455 cases of HIV, 33 cases of rabies, 724 cases of imported malaria, 3,015 cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis, 64 cases of visceral leishmaniasis, 205 cases of flaccid paralysis, 18 cases of leprosy and 1,394 cases of collective toxico-infection. Concerning non-communicable diseases, the number of hypertensives treated at the level of primary health establishments (ESSP) rose to 1,252,984 at the national level and those diagnosed numbered 106,357. The number of diabetics treated at ESSP level reached 1,517,130 in 2024. Diabetics diagnosed at these establishments stood at 96,067. There are more women than men (59,632 against 36,435). When it comes to the main causes of death, diseases of the circulatory system come first (20%). Then come tumors (15%), diseases of the respiratory system (8%), endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (7%), certain conditions whose origin lies in the perinatal period (5%), certain infectious and parasitic diseases (3%), diseases of the genitourinary system (2%), diseases of the nervous system (3%) and diseases of the digestive system (2%).
