    Kullu, Manali and Shimla are frequently discussed when searching for tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh. But if the goal is a beautiful place in the Himalayas devoid of noise and bustle, all these will slowly disappear. There is a small heaven that emerges in such investigations. That is Mashobra which is only 12 km from Shimla.

    The main attraction of Mashobra is the beauty of the mountain ranges spread all around as far as the eye can see. The warm breeze coming down from the Himalayan mountains and the relaxed life without any rush will fill the mind of any traveler. Mashobra is a paradise for those who love to walk through forest trails and relax in nature without any intermediaries.

    Mashobra’s life is cool and green throughout the year. The scenic forest trails, apple orchards and viewpoints will bring tourists closer to Mashobra. Even today, Mashobra is far away from the hustle and bustle of the usual tourist spots. That is the beauty and charm of Mashobra.

    When to visit?

    The best time is summer which lasts from March to June. The weather is pleasant at this time. This is the perfect time for sightseeing as well as trekking through forest trails and outdoor activities. During the rainy season from July to September, Mashobra’s nature becomes lush and beautiful. But unexpected rains kill the fun. Snow lovers can opt for winter travel from October to February. Nowadays Mashobra is used to make blankets of snow.

    You can also visit the summer residence of the President

    Spread over 151.6 acres, this dreamy palatial building and its surrounding views will enchant any traveler. The main building spread over 10,628 square feet is surrounded by eye-catching gardens, apple orchards and scenic forest trails.

    That historical change

    In 1965, the then President Dr. S. With Radhakrishnan’s intervention, this building was officially declared as the summer residence of the President. Prior to that, the prestigious ‘Viceregal Lodge’ in Shimla had adorned this title. After this change the Viceroyal Lodge became the present day famous ‘Indian Institute of Advanced Study’ (IIAS).

    The doors open for tourists

    For the first time in its history, this heritage building has been opened to the public from April 2023. Now everyone has an opportunity to witness this splendor of India’s cultural heritage. Tickets for the visit can be booked online and in person. It is open on all days except Mondays and public holidays.

    Major attractions in Mashobra Rashtrapati Niwas

    1.Guided Heritage Tour: Through historical routes.With the help of a guide, get to know the interiors of the main heritage building and its history and cultural significance.

    2.Landscape Garden: Spring of Flowers Stroll through exquisitely designed lawns and gardens that stretch as far as the eye can see.

    3. Kalyani Helipad: Aerial Views. Located at a height of 8,600 feet above sea level, one can enjoy a 360 degree view of the Himalayan mountains from the Kalyani Helipad.

    4. Nature Trail: A walk through the forest A 1.8 km long nature trail through the forest is full of local biodiversity.

    5.Orchard Trail: Afternoon in Orchards.Walk through orchards including apple orchards to reach a serene view point on top of the hill.

    How to reach

    Mashobra is only 12 km from Shimla. It has good road facilities. You can reach here by taxis, own vehicle or public transport. Shimla is the nearest railway station. The nearest airport is Jubarhatti.

    Mashobra is one of those rare hill villages where natural beauty, tranquility and simplicity come together. Mashobra is the perfect place for those looking for a peaceful Himalayan countryside away from the hustle and bustle. Couples, solo travelers and group travelers alike can enjoy a peaceful vacation here. Let’s see what are the main attractions here.

    President’s Bungalow- Mashobra (summer residence of the President of India) is located in Mashobra. This building was built entirely of wood in 1850. Now the President and his family come and stay here every summer. In May 1948, Lord Mountbatten, the Viceroy and later Governor General of British India, and his wife stayed in this bungalow for a few weeks.

    Craignano Nature Park- This park was developed in the vicinity of a villa built by Italian nobleman Sevalier Federico Peletti during the British rule. The name was given in memory of his native town of Craignano. The park is located at an altitude of 7,700 feet above sea level. It is also famous for its apple orchards, which are said to be the highest in the world. There are park and adventure activities for kids. Working hours are 10 am to 5 pm.     Mashobra Reserve Forest Sanctuary- This is one of the beautiful and serene natural forest sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by huge cedar, pine and oak trees, this forest is considered to be one of the largest reservoirs in Asia. Animals like leopard, monkey, wild boar, musk deer, jackal and various species of birds like Himalayan monal are found here. It is also a favorite area for trekking lovers. Cycling through the forest is also allowed. But special permission from the forest department is required to enter the forest. Normal entry time is 9 am to 6 pm.

    Mahasu Peak- It is the highest peak in Himachal Pradesh. Being the highest point in Kufri, one can enjoy the beauty of the beautiful Himalayan mountains including Badrinath and Kedarnath. Tourists also rely on horses to reach the top of Mahasu Peak. This horse ride through the muddy and steep path will give the tourists a unique experience. Once you reach the top of the peak, you can see an ancient temple called Mahasu Naga. During the winter months from December to February, you can enjoy snow sports like skiing and tobogganing. Visiting here is usually allowed from 8 am to 5 pm.
