Aliyev also accused MEPs of trying to “sabotage” the peace process with Armenia following the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Mezzola’s answer
Roberta Mezzola reacted immediately and defended the institution.
“The European Parliament is a democratically elected body. We understand that our decisions may be uncomfortable for some, but we will not change the way we work,” she said.
The dispute comes after critical resolutions
Tensions have increased following a series of European Parliament resolutions critical of Azerbaijan’s actions. The latest, adopted in Strasbourg, calls for the return of Armenians who left the region in 2023 and the release of detained prisoners of war.
Diplomatic context
Despite criticism of the parliament, Aliyev welcomed the European Commission’s efforts to develop relations with Baku.
The meeting in Yerevan brought together leaders from nearly 50 countries and aims to promote dialogue between Azerbaijan and Armenia after decades of conflict.
The next meeting of the format is expected to be held in Azerbaijan in 2028.
