“A number of hostile drones were targeted today at the passenger terminal (T1) at Kuwait International Airport,” Kuwait’s military wrote on X.
According to Kuwait, one person was killed and at least 63 others were injured when Iran attacked with 13 missiles and 17 drones. A post on X from the Foreign Ministry condemns the “brutal” Iranian missile and drone attacks on important civilian facilities.
The damage is described as extensive. All air traffic was halted in connection with the attack, but has since partially resumed, according to AFP. The airport is located outside Kuwait City and also has a military section.
Tankers are fired upon
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the attack self-defense, and a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry in Tehran condemned “the US colonialist exploitation of land and infrastructure in the countries of the region for aggressive plans against Iran.”
“We emphasize the direct and unmistakable responsibility of the leaders of Kuwait and Bahrain for last night’s aggressions,” they write.
But Kuwait denies that its territory and airspace have been used in attacks against Iran. The Foreign Ministry summoned Iran’s top diplomatic representative in Kuwait after the attack and made it clear that “Kuwait categorically opposes the use of its territory for hostile acts against any country,” according to a statement from the ministry.
Drones against Bahrain
The US military fired on a tanker en route to the Iranian island of Kharg on Tuesday. According to US Central Command (Centcom), they also carried out an attack on a military target on the island of Qeshm.
Araghchi condemned the attack on X and wrote that “all hostile actions will be met” and that “what sanctions and war failed to achieve will not be achieved with even more war.”
In response to the attack on the tanker, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard then fired on what it described as ships with ties to the US. The US military, for its part, says the boats were civilian and that drones fired at them were shot down.
Centcom has also stated that US forces and Bahraini air defenses shot down three missiles fired at Bahrain.
