The day following the April 30 general election will be observed as a public holiday, Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced as he addressed thousands of supporters at the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) campaign launch at People’s Place.
The declaration followed confirmation that the country will head to the polls on April 30, with Nomination Day set for April 13, as the governing party formally launched its re-election campaign.
The public holiday announcement was presented in the context of what the ABLP leader anticipates will be a victory for the party, adding a celebratory note to the political rally.
In outlining the party’s record, Browne said Antigua and Barbuda has undergone significant transformation since the ABLP took office in 2014, moving “from struggle to strength.”
He pointed to economic recovery following substantial job losses prior to 2014, stating that the administration has since restored employment and driven sustained growth.
The ABLP leader highlighted a range of measures aimed at easing the cost of living, including the removal of personal income tax, reductions in the Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax (ABST) on essential goods and the expansion of food assistance programmes.
He also referenced government subsidies on fuel and utilities, noting that the state has absorbed rising global costs to prevent increases for consumers.
On infrastructure, Browne cited ongoing roadworks across the country, expanded water production capacity and housing initiatives that have supported thousands of homeowners.
He said these efforts demonstrate a focus on delivery and tangible improvements in people’s daily lives.
The speech also touched on investments in education and healthcare, including expanded access to tertiary education and improvements in medical services.
Browne urged voters to ensure they are prepared for the election, including renewing their voter identification cards ahead of polling day.
The ABLP, in office since 2014, is seeking a fourth consecutive term as campaigning intensifies ahead of the April 30 vote.
