The Dominica Association of Persons With Disabilities (DAPD) will conduct a six weeks sign language course to improve the communication with individuals who use sign language
The course will provide training specifically for service providers, health care providers, teachers, tourism workers, hospitality workers, public and private sector establishment workers and the general public by extension.
President of the Dominica Association of Persons with Disabilities Judy Sango said the aim of the sign language course is to effectively remove the communication barrier, by educating the public , to communicate using sign language.
Sango emphasized that the sign language course is very important as it will assist with inclusion of individuals with non verbal issues. Which will help empower, build independence and transform responsible Interactions.
“I believe upon completion of the course it will benefit both participants and those who use sign language as a daily means of communication. I feel for instance, when persons take part in the course it may also increase their customers as individuals who use sign language will be more inclined to enter into that business and receive equitable, respectful service, as oppose to going elsewhere,” Sango stated.
Sango added “I would like to encourage the public to sign up and participate , this is a course that ensures no one is left behind.”
The sign language course commences on 7 May to 23 July, 2026 from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm at DAPD`s Headquarters in Goodwill. The cost of the sign language course is $250, interested persons can contact the office on 440 0842 for more information.
