A drone strike has been reported at Damietta Port in Egypt after an explosion occurred on a cargo ship near an LNG facility. Maritime security firm Ambrey said a US-owned gas storage tanker at the port was targeted in a drone attack, according to an initial assessment of the incident.
The Marshall Islands-flagged LNG floating storage facility was struck by at least one unmanned aerial vehicle while at the port. No damage or casualties have been reported, Ambrey added, and no group has claimed responsibility as of yet.
Shipping services company Inchcape reports that the incident occurred during cargo discharge, and the ships involved have since been safely relocated outside the port area. It added that two gas tankers caught fire following the strike.
Local authorities rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control, and port operations are expected to resume tonight.The
Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said there have been no injuries.
While it has avoided being dragged into the conflict, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi urged Donald Trump to stop the war in March.
Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has also been involved in diplomatic meetings with the US, European nations, and the Gulf states.
Egypt has also formed an alliance with Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia as they share concerns over the regional agenda pushed by Israel and its allies.
