Damascus, April 28 (SANA) A cultural exhibition highlighting traditional Syrian crafts opened at the Damascus Citadel this week, bringing together artisans to showcase heritage skills and promote local handicrafts.
The event, titled “Damascus: Rose and Heritage” and organized by the Ministries of Tourism and Culture, has transformed the citadel’s courtyards into a space for live demonstrations, exhibitions and interactive activities aimed at preserving traditional crafts.
Artisans from across Syria presented a range of handmade products, including recycled art, brocade textiles and handwoven fabrics, reflecting the country’s cultural identity.
Seham Kahwaji, a member of the General Union of Craftsmen, said she repurposes materials such as broken glass and eggshells to create decorative pieces. “These events give us opportunities to develop our work and connect with other artisans,” she said, adding that such initiatives support broader efforts to revive local production.
Brocade weaver Maher Derki said the exhibition provides a platform to highlight Syrian craftsmanship, noting that many traditional products rely on demand from tourists and foreign buyers.
From Hama, artisan Nesreen al-Wodaihi demonstrated weaving on a traditional wooden loom, saying the exhibition helps show that heritage crafts remain active. She said her work includes handmade textiles produced by local artisans.
Organizers said the exhibition, which runs until May 7, aims to support artisans through marketing initiatives and workshops while encouraging public engagement with traditional crafts.
