A man in his 80s has been charged with breaching the Protection, Conservation and Hunting of Wild Birds and Wild Mammals Act, by trapping and killing at least five mink.
In the indictment against the man, it is said that for some time before April 2024, he hunted wild animals with bio-traps that had neither been approved by the Environment Agency nor had he applied for an exemption to use the bio-traps.
He used these fishing tools to catch at least five mink at the parade ground in Húsavík and Kaldbakstjarn south of Húsavík and then killed the animals.
It is required that the man be sentenced to punishment and to pay all court costs, but the offense he is accused of involves fines or up to two years in prison. The main hearing in the case will take place tomorrow in the Northern Eastern District Court.
