The death of Cristobal “Toby” Muñozat 82 years old, mourns Panamanian musical culture. The renowned composer, pianist, arranger, producer and musical director dedicated several decades of his career to the creation and dissemination of national music.
He Ministry of Culture confirmed the news this Wednesday, September 30, and highlighted Muñoz’s career and his contributions to the country’s art scene.
The institution extended its condolences to his family, friends and loved ones, while highlighting the legacy that the musician leaves behind after a life dedicated to art and Panamanian culture.
Muñoz left an extensive work such as composer, pianist, arranger and musical director. “La Parranda” is among his most recognized creations, while his recording production includes works such as Toby Muñoz, La Parranda in Panama and Christmas in Panama.
In 1969 he was part of Panama Brasswhere he served as organist and musical director. The project brought together prominent Panamanian performers and explored various musical genres.
His contribution also transcended artistic creation. Muñoz provided support and guidance to other musicians and groups in areas such as recording, training, job placement, stage management and instrument mastery, in addition to promoting tools so that artists could turn their work into a source of income and achieve better living conditions.
Throughout his career he maintained ties with institutions such as the INAC, the School of Fine Arts and the Conservatoryin addition to relating to international organizations of musicians in Europe, the United States and South America.
His influence continued among new generations. In 2024, the National Network of Youth Orchestras and Choirs of Panama presented the medley “Parranda de Panama-Toby Muñoz”as part of recognition of his career.
