A New Chapter for Belize Basketball
Belize’s young basketball talent is preparing to take the international stage as the national U20 team gets ready to represent the country at the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games in the Dominican Republic.
On today’s episode of Open Your Eyes, President of the Basketball Federation of Belize Jacob Leslie joined national team players Douglas Langford, Josiah Moseley, and Tevaughn Dawson to discuss the team’s journey, preparation, and ambitions heading into the competition.
Leslie explained that this opportunity represents a major milestone for Belize basketball, as the team becomes the first Belizean basketball squad to qualify for this level of competition since 1998. The tournament also provides a pathway toward the Pan American Games, an achievement that Belize basketball has never reached before.
Building a Program for Long-Term Success
Unlike previous national teams that often relied on bringing in players from abroad shortly before competitions, Leslie explained that the federation made a deliberate decision to develop a homegrown program.
This current group of players has been together since 2023, beginning at the U17 level before progressing to the U20 category. The extended time together has allowed the athletes to develop not only their basketball skills but also the chemistry and trust needed to compete internationally.
Leslie shared that the goal has always been to create a system where young athletes can grow through basketball while also developing as individuals. He highlighted the importance of using the sport as a tool for education, discipline, and personal growth.
A Team Built on Chemistry and Brotherhood
For players like Douglas Langford, Josiah Moseley, and Tevaughn Dawson, the experience of growing together over the past several years has created a strong bond both on and off the court.
Langford described the team’s connection as one of its biggest strengths, explaining that the players have developed a brotherhood that translates into better communication and performance during games.
Moseley added that having a strong relationship with teammates helps create better chemistry, allowing players to understand each other’s movements and make better decisions on the court.
The players emphasized that this team is different because there is no focus on individual success. Instead, every member understands their role and is committed to working together toward a common goal.
Focused on Bringing Home Gold
As the tournament approaches, the team is entering competition with confidence and determination. Langford shared that the players have been maintaining an intense training schedule, including daily practices and additional gym sessions to ensure they are fully prepared.
The team’s mindset is clear: compete for gold.
Leslie explained that while previous competitions were about gaining experience and advancing further, this tournament marks the first time he believes the team has the preparation, chemistry, and confidence needed to realistically compete for the championship.
Belize will open the tournament against Nicaragua before facing the Dominican Republic and Guatemala during the group stage. The top teams will advance to the semifinals.
Belize Encouraged to Rally Behind the Team
The Basketball Federation of Belize is encouraging fans across the country to support the team throughout the competition. Games will be streamed live on YouTube, while updates, behind-the-scenes content, and team coverage will be shared through the federation’s social media platforms.
Leslie said that the support from Belizeans has always provided motivation for the national teams, especially when players see their country rallying behind them.
With years of preparation, a strong team bond, and a historic opportunity ahead, Team Belize is ready to represent the country and continue breaking barriers for Belize basketball.
