Rebecca Grynspan, Costa Rican candidate for the general secretary of the United Nations Organization (UN)revealed that he met with the Foreign Minister of Russia, Sergei Lavrov.
According to the Costa Rican, the appointment took place this Tuesday April 7. During the meeting, he assured, they exchanged points of view about the UN.
“We reaffirm the importance of respect the UN Charter. “I shared my vision on how the organization can refocus its efforts, strengthen its effectiveness, drive necessary reforms and respond more directly to current global challenges,” the former vice president of Costa Rica wrote on her social networks.
Costa Rica nominated Grynspan, on March 3, for the top UN post.
The diplomatic note was signed by the President of the Republic, Rodrigo Chaves.
Grynspan was Vice President of the Republic in the administration of José María Figueres (1994-1998) and Vice Minister of Finance in the first government of Óscar Ariasbetween 1986 and 1988.
Among his main positions in international organizations, She served as general secretary of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (2014–2021)presiding over regional summits of heads of State and Government; In addition, she was Undersecretary General of the United Nations and Associate Administrator of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), as well as Regional Director of the UNDP for Latin America and the Caribbean.
Since 2021, the economist has served as Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Candidacies
The Costa Rican faces three candidates. Together with the former Chilean president Michelle Bacheletthey seek to be the first woman in history to hold that position at the UN.
Both compete against the Argentine Rafael Mariano Grossi and the former president of Senegal Macky Sal. The Argentina Virginia Gamba was also in the race, with the backing of the Maldives, but that country he later withdrew support.

The vote will be held this year so that the elected person begins duties on the first day of 2027; The appointment lasts five years.
