Commonwealth Games guide: Canadian teen wins gold, and who to watch Friday

Teenage Para sprinter Sheriauna Haase captured gold in the 100 metres to headline a six-medal Thursday for Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Haase, 19, won the women’s T47 category (for upper-limb impairment) in 12.23 seconds, lowering her own Canadian record. The silver went to another young Canadian: 17-year-old Chloe Dunbar.

Canada added two more silvers in track and field as vision-impaired sprinter George Quarcoo and his guide placed second in the men’s 100m T12 while Julia Tunks was the runner-up in the women’s discus throw. Meanwhile, former Olympic decathlon champion Damian Warner put himself in first place at the halfway point of his competition.

Weightlifters Xavier Lusignan and 18-year-old Etta Love each took bronze as Canada finished with eight medals in that sport, including golds by 2021 Olympic champion Maude Charron and two-time junior world champ Charlotte Simoneau.

    WATCH | Canada’s Haase, Dunbar go 1-2 in women’s 100m T47 final:

Canadians Sheriauna Haase and Chloe Dunbar win gold and silver in women’s 100-metre T47 final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

    Some other key Canadian results:

    * Tatiana Aholou finished sixth in the women’s 100m hurdles final, while Olympian Gabriela DeBues-Stafford was 14th in the women’s 5,000m. Australia’s Rose Davies outkicked countrywoman Jess Hull to complete the 5,000/10,000 double.

    * Lucia Stafford (Gabriela’s younger sister) and Simone Plourde qualified for the final in the women’s mile. Stafford clocked 4:31.27 for the second-fastest overall time in the opening round of the four-lap race, which is back in the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 60 years. The final is on Saturday.

    * Lauren Gale grabbed the last spot in Saturday’s women’s 400m final after placing fourth in her semifinal heat, advancing as a time qualifier.

    * In a disappointing moment, reigning men’s 400m indoor world champion Christopher Morales Williams failed to advance to his final. The 21-year-old finished third in his semifinal heat, just 0.04 behind the second-place automatic qualifier.

Through seven days of competition, Canada ranks third in the medal standings with 15 gold, 13 silver and 17 bronze, for a total of 45. Australia (51 gold, 110 total) has a big lead, followed by England (15, 65).

Here’s more on the top Canadian moments from Day 7.

    Canadians to watch on Friday

Here’s who to follow on Day 8:

    Track and field

Warner takes a narrow lead into the final day of the decathlon as he tries to win his second Commonwealth Games title — and his first since he struck gold in 2014 right here in Glasgow.

The 2021 Olympic champion started strong today, winning the 100m leg in a wind-aided 10.21 seconds before placing second in the long jump, fifth in shot put and third in long jump. But he ended day one with a seventh-place showing in the 400m, fading badly down the stretch. That left the 36-year-old with a 14-point edge over India’s Tejaswin Shankar.

    Friday’s decathlon events are the 110m hurdles (5:05 a.m. ET), discus throw (5:50 a.m. ET), pole vault (7:30 a.m. ET), javelin throw (2 p.m ET) and, finally, the lung-busting 1,500m (3:35 p.m. ET).

The pole vault is a big obstacle for Warner to clear. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, he was leading through seven stages before failing to get over the bar on his first three attempts, resulting in a zero score that knocked him out of the competition. And it happened again at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where Warner was in second place until fouling out.

WATCH | Warner enters Day 2 of decathlon with slim lead:

Damian Warner’s decathlon lead shortens after fading to 7th in the 400m

Damian Warner of London, Ont., faded quickly right before the 400-metre finish line and saw his overall decathlon lead shrink to 14 points.

Olympic 4x100m relay champion Aaron Brown will run for a medal in the men’s 200m final at 4:25 p.m. ET. The 35-year-old took silver in this event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and today he clocked the second-fastest overall time in the semis — a wind-aided 19.90 seconds. South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile (19.82) had the best time, while 100m silver medallist Lachlan Kennedy of Australia (20.12) was third overall. 100m winner Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon missed out on the final by one hundredth of a second. Canada’s Audrey Leduc, Frederique Chiasson and Marie-Eloise Leclairin did not qualify for the women’s 200m final.

Race walker Evan Dunfee defends his Commonwealth title in the men’s 10-kilometre event at 2:05 p.m. ET. Dunfee, 35, is the reigning world champion in the men’s 35km distance and took bronze in the now-defunct 50K at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo.

Savannah Sutherland and Brooke Overholt will race in the women’s 400m hurdles final at 3:52 p.m. ET. Sutherland, 22, is the Canadian record holder. She placed an impressive seventh in her Olympic debut in 2024 in Paris before breaking two-time Olympic champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s NCAA record in 2025 while winning the U.S. collegiate title for the second time.

Canada’s other medal hopeful on Friday is Jennifer Elizarov in the women’s pole vault final at 2:08 p.m. ET.

Here’s the full track and field schedule with startlists and results.

    Boxing

Four Canadians are fighting in the semifinals: Scarlett Delgado in the women’s 54kg weight class at 5:30 a.m. ET, Joshua Ofori in the men’s 80kg at 7 a.m. ET, Amber-Jane Wall in the women’s 51kg at 2 p.m. ET and Marie Al-Ahmadieh in the women’s 60kg at 2:30 p.m. ET.

All semifinalists are guaranteed to walk away with a medal. If they win, they’ll fight for gold on Saturday. If they lose, they’re automatically awarded a bronze.

    Lawn bowling

The men’s pairs duo of Ryan Bester and John Bezear has a big match at 11:25 a.m. ET against Scotland. With two games left, they’re tied for first place in Group C with identical 3-0 records, and only the top team in each group advances to the medal round. Bester, a three-time singles medallist who’s appearing in his seventh Commonwealth Games, did not make the playoffs in his solo event.

In women’s singles, Canada’s Kelly McKerihen (2-2) is also fighting for first place in her group heading into her match against the Cook Islands at 3:40 p.m. ET. The Para women’s pairs team of Jean Stairs and Anne Hibberd fell to 0-3 today.

    Judo

Competition begins with the full tournaments in five different divisions. Canada has a judoka in three of them: Julien Frascadore in the men’s 66kg weight class, Heidi Quach in the women’s 48kg Evelyn Beaton in the women’s 52kg.

Matches begin at 6 a.m. ET, but the Canadians are later on the docket.

    Track cycling

Canada was involved in only one event today: the men’s team sprint, where Cole Dempster, Tyler Rorke and James Hedgcock failed to advance to the medal races after placing fifth in qualifying. Friday will be much busier, with Canadians competing in six events.

Dempster, Rorke and Hedgcock are back in action individually for the men’s keirin (11 a.m. ET start, medal final at 2:18 p.m. ET), while Jonathan Hinse and Gabriel Seguin do two races apiece: the men’s 4,000m individual pursuit (qualifying at 7:29 a.m. ET, medal rounds at 1:16 p.m. ET) and the men’s elimination race final at 2:23 p.m. ET.

On the women’s side, Canada has 2022 Commonwealth Games team sprint silver medallist Sarah Orban in the individual sprint (qualifying at 5 a.m. ET, finals at 1:41 p.m. ET). Maggie Coles-Lyster and Alexandra Volstad will do double duty, racing in both the women’s 4,000m individual pursuit (qualifying at 5:30 a.m. ET, medal rounds at 11:33 a.m. ET) and the women’s 10km scratch race final at 12:56 p.m. ET.
