Details: According to Merts, “everyone understands that Ukraine’s immediate accession to the EU is, of course, impossible.” At the same time, he emphasized that he wants to “ensure closer integration (of Ukraine, – ed.) into European institutions.”

As an example of such interaction, the chancellor cited the possible participation of the President of Ukraine in the meetings of the European Council, but so far without the right to vote, or due to the gradual inclusion of Ukraine in certain spheres of politics, depending on the state of reforms.
In general, Mertz pointed out the need to launch in the European Union “a process with a strategy of gradual rapprochement of Ukraine with the EU, at the end of which, of course, full membership should stand”.
“But we need intermediate steps. I have repeatedly talked about this in recent days with President Zelenskyi… It is important that this rapprochement now also accelerates accession negotiations and becomes a bridge to future full membership,” the German Chancellor emphasized.
We will remind: Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Ukraine not interested in partial EU membershipdrawing parallels with the fact that Europe is not interested in a “limited” Ukrainian army.
Later he again rejected the idea of ”symbolic” membership in the EU, emphasizing that Ukraine’s struggle to protect Europe is not symbolic, and it deserves to become a full member of the bloc.
In turn, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka said that Ukraine ready to postpone receiving some benefits from the European Union to accelerate the process of joining the EU.
