The clock is ticking for the public transportation system. With just days left before a threatened nationwide shutdown, the Belize Bus Association (BBA) says operators may park their buses on Monday if government fails to intervene.
BBA President Philip Jones warns that soaring diesel prices have pushed many operators into daily losses. The association has proposed fuel tax relief, subsidies, or a fare adjustment, but says those options have not been approved.
“We don’t want to strike. We don’t want to discontinue service,” Jones said, urging the Minister of Transport to meet with operators. But he cautioned that if no action is taken, it won’t be Armageddon, it will be “busgeddon.”
Independent operators say fuel now takes the largest share of their revenue.
If talks fail, thousands of commuters across the country could be left without transportation come Monday.
