Activist Alyssa Phillip and her mother Camille Caresquero have been granted $60,000 bail on charges laid following their arrest during the Labour Day march last Friday.
Phillip was charged with leading a march and failing to call on participants to disperse, disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest while Caresquero faced charges of being present at a march and failing to disperse, obstructing a police officer and resisting arrest.
The two appeared virtually before Master Kateisha Ambrose-Persadsingh and were allowed to continue on the $60,000 bail which was granted at the police station following their arrests. No conditions have been attached.
The matters were transferred to the Siparia Magistrates court where their pleas will subsequently be taken. The cases have next been scheduled for July 20.
The two are being represented by attorney Fayola Sandy.
Phillip and Caresquero also faced the court a mere ten days ago following protest action near the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
On that occasion, they were placed on $10,000 bail on charges of behaving in a disorderly manner and breaching the Emergency Powers Regulations which prohibits persons from seeking, whether orally or otherwise, to influence public opinion in a manner likely to be prejudicial to public safety or public order. These matters have been adjourned to September 29.
The women have been against the decision to charge Kaia Sealy after the January 20 shooting death of her husband Joshua Samaroo during a police involved incident.
Sealy who was undergoing treatment abroad, returned to this country last week Wednesday and was taken before the court on charges of unlawfully killing Samaroo and shooting at three police officers. It is also alleged that she was in possession of a pistol and two rounds of 9mm ammunition, had these items to endanger life and discharged a firearm within 40 metres of a public road. Sealy has been placed on $700,000 bail with conditions.
