Belize’s Economy Is Growing, So Why Are Families Struggling?

Belize’s Economy Is Growing, So Why Are Families Struggling?

There is the Belize reflected in economic reports, where employment is at record levels and major development projects are taking shape. Then there is the Belize many families experience every day, where household bills are rising, some industries are struggling and a steady job does not always guarantee financial security. Prime Minister John Briceño used his State of the Nation Address to make the case that the country is moving in the right direction. Tonight, we examine the numbers, the promises and the reality behind the government’s development agenda. News Five’s Paul Lopez reports.

    [ECONOMIC GROWTH VS HOUSEHOLD REALITY]

The Prime Minister says Belize’s economy grew by five-point-one percent and that the country is doing exceptionally well. But if the economy is thriving, why do many Belizean families continue to struggle with the cost of food, transportation and everyday necessities? And can strong economic growth coexist with financial hardship at the household level?

    Prime Minister John Briceño

                Prime Minister John Briceño

    Prime Minister John Briceño

“At the macro level, Belize is doing exceptionally well. Year on year economic growth continues apace, at levels, more often than not, higher than historical averages. The Statistical Institute of Belize’s most recent quarterly report showed growth at five-point one percent.”

    [EMPLOYMENT AND QUALITY OF WORK]

A job may provide a paycheck, but does it offer enough to build a secure future? Government is celebrating a ninety-eight percent employment rate as a major economic achievement. But the headline number does not tell us what those jobs pay, how stable they are or whether they provide meaningful opportunities for advancement.  Is employment growth translating into prosperity for Belizean workers?

    Prime Minister John Briceño

“Belizeans are working in record numbers with an official countrywide employment rate of ninety-eight percent.  During the financial year 2025-2026 alone, the BelizeINVEST unit of BELTRAIDE facilitated thirteen approved investment projects valued at more than two hundred and fifty-five million dollars, associated with the creation of more than nine hundred jobs.”

    [THE $324 MILLION CAPITAL PROGRAM]

Government is preparing to pump three hundred and twenty-four million dollars into capital projects this year, with the goal of improving infrastructure and driving national development. How will these projects improve the lives of Belizeans, and can this level of spending be sustained without creating additional fiscal pressure in the years ahead?

    Prime Minister John Briceño

“Government’s stimulus spending is plentiful. In this fiscal year, three hundred and twenty-four million dollars of capital investments will be disbursed, variously in critical infrastructure such as major highway upgrades, health care programs including the final expansion of the NHI, education at all levels and, of course, citizen protection.”

    [THE SUGAR INDUSTRY CRISIS]

Belize’s sugar industry is facing a serious setback, as disease and pest infestations take a growing toll on production. Prime Minister John Briceño acknowledged the steep decline, saying fusarium disease and mealybugs are largely to blame. How much damage have these challenges caused, and will millions of dollars in public support be enough to restore one of Belize’s most important industries?

    Prime Minister John Briceño

“Take sugar, for example, where the double whammy of fusarium disease and the mealy bug encroachment will have cut sugar production virtually in half compared to three years ago. As in every case, Government has responded to the emergency with alacrity and ample financial support, allocating five million dollars toward the bug extermination and three million dollars to disease eradication.”

    [INVESTMENT AND JOB CREATION]

Government is touting more than two hundred and fifty-five million dollars in approved investments through BelizeINVEST and nearly a billion dollars more awaiting approval. The numbers may sound promising, but how many of these projects will become reality, and how much of that investment will reach ordinary Belizeans?

    Prime Minister John Briceño

“The Unit is also currently managing seven investments pending approval valued at more than nine hundred million dollars, with the potential to generate more than six hundred jobs, together with an additional investment pipeline of eleven projects valued at more than sixty-seven million dollars.”

    [TOURISM AND SARGASSUM]

Tourism remains a major pillar of the Belizean economy. Yet the Prime Minister says visitor arrivals have softened in recent months as sargassum continues to blanket several popular destinations. What is government’s long-term answer to a problem that appears increasingly likely to become a permanent challenge?

    Prime Minister John Briceño

“The BTB, with Government’s support, has formulated a rescue plan, including using funds from BTB and grants and loans from the IFI’s to fund the plan and the specialized equipment required to combat this menace.”

Prime Minister Briceno has described an economy that is growing, employing record numbers of Belizeans and attracting major investments. But with falling sugar production, softer tourism, rising household costs and warnings about debt and external vulnerability, what evidence can he provide that this growth is reaching ordinary Belizeans and is sustainable beyond the positive statistics? Reporting for News Five, I am Paul Lopez.
