Ahead of the NATO summit in July in Ankara, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš received the Alliance’s Secretary General, Mark Rutte, in Prague. In addition to summit preparations, developments in the Middle East and their security implications were the main focus of the talks.
In Prague, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš received NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte for discussions. The focus was on preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in July in Ankara, as well as the current security situation in the Middle East.
Rutte visited the Czech capital as part of a tour of several NATO member states. Alongside summit preparations, both sides also discussed recent developments in the Middle East and their security implications. Another topic was a planned video conference on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, which is considered a key hub for global oil trade.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte highlighted the Czech Republic’s contributions to Euro-Atlantic security. At the same time, Rutte stressed the growing importance of increased defence spending in light of the tense global situation. This is essential to ensure sufficient forces, resources and capabilities.
Prime Minister Babiš also emphasised the importance of NATO commitments and announced plans to further expand the country’s military capacities. The aim is to significantly increase the size of the armed forces and fully meet alliance commitments.

At the same time, the Prime Minister highlighted the role of the Czech armed forces within the Alliance. They enjoy a strong international reputation, particularly in overseas missions. In connection with the tense situation around the Strait of Hormuz, the head of government also indicated possible Czech contributions to securing the region. He did not provide details, but referred to the capabilities of domestic industry.

In conclusion, Babiš warned of the economic consequences of a possible blockade of the strategically important strait. This could have significant impacts on Europe’s energy supply and fuel prices. Europe must therefore reconsider its economic resilience and security of supply, the Prime Minister said.
