Today, Friday, May 1, 2026, Tunisia, in parallel with all workers in the world, celebrates International Labor Day, which falls on May 1 of every year.
The first Labor Day celebration was celebrated in our country in 1946, coinciding with the founding of the Tunisian General Labor Union. It was officially recognized as a national holiday in 1948, and it was considered the first day on which workers were given the right to stop working with a guarantee of full wages.
International Workers’ Day dates back to labor movements that took place in the American city of Chicago in the late nineteenth century, when workers protested to demand that daily working hours be reduced to eight hours. Although these protests were violently suppressed, they later turned into a global symbol of the working class struggle.
Tunisians’ celebration of Labor Day this year coincided with the issuance of regulatory orders related to wage increases in the public and private sectors, in the Official Gazette of the Republic issued on April 30, 2026.
