According to the representatives of the shelter, they were approached at the end of April by a man who returned from abroad to visit his elderly mother. During his visit, he discovered an unexpected sight – a large number of rabbits living in the woman’s apartment, breeding uncontrollably.
At first, the information received by the volunteers was hard to believe, but when they went to the place, they saw the scale of the situation with their own eyes.
During the first visit, 13 rabbits of various ages and six newborns just a few days old were taken from the apartment. The animals were immediately taken to the shelter, but the rescue work did not end there.
Two more rabbits were soon reported found, and a little later three more. The volunteers had to go to the place again and take care of the remaining animals.
A total of 18 rabbits were taken from the apartment. Shelter representatives suspect that as many as seven females may be pregnant. Most of the animals were in poor coat condition, scared and exhausted, and needed veterinary care and attention.
According to the shelter, this story reveals the consequences of irresponsible animal breeding and reminds us of the problems that can arise when donating animals without assessing the future owners’ ability to care for them.
Currently, three of the rescued babies are already about a month old and ready to go to their new homes. Rabbits feed themselves, eat hay, drink water and are active and curious.
However, future owners are reminded that young rabbits require a lot of attention and patience. The babies are still learning to behave and do not always use the litter box, so the new owners will have to contribute to their upbringing.
The shelter also notes that the gender of the rabbits has not yet been determined. For this reason, the future owners will undertake to take care of the castration or sterilization of the animals when the time comes.
“If you’re looking for a new family member and are ready for a long-term and responsible commitment, maybe one of these babies is waiting for you,” the shelter says.
You can get to know the babies when you come to the shelter in Prienai district, near Kaunas.
