President Luis Abinader will meet this Wednesday morning with the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres.
According to the spokesperson for the Presidency, Félix Reyna, the meeting is scheduled to be held at 10:00 in the morning at the National Palace.
The meeting takes place after Guterres traveled to Haiti and described the humanitarian situation in that country as “desperate” and asked the international community to “stop looking the other way.”
“The humanitarian situation here is desperate, but there are slight glimmers of hope,” Guterres wrote in a message on the social network X, which he accompanied with a photo of himself inside a helicopter flying over the Caribbean country. The UN Secretary General sent a message to the international community: “Stop looking the other way.”
Before going to Haiti, Guterres landed in the Dominican Republic on Monday night, where he was received by a delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mirex), headed by Vice Minister Ruben Sillé.
According to the press release sent by the Foreign Ministry, the secretary of the international organization thanked the Dominican Government for the support provided to international efforts to stabilize Haiti, highlighting the fundamental role played by the country in the approval of the resolution that created the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) by the Security Council.
“On behalf of the United Nations, I want to thank the Dominican Republic for its enormous generosity. The support of the Dominican Republic has allowed us to quickly establish a support mission in Haiti for the Gang Suppression Force that is just beginning, which could not have arrived so quickly without the commitment, generosity and cooperation of the Dominican Republic. Many thanks to the Government and the Dominican people,” was what Guterres expressed according to the Mirex press release.
