Sir, – I was delighted to see the Government allowed a free vote in the Dáil this week on a Sinn Féin Bill. I’m wondering if a free vote of conscience could also be provided for the Government’s Defence (Amendment) Bill 2026, which plans to abolish the obligation for a UN mandate before Irish troops can serve militarily abroad (approval by Government, Dáil and the UN).
Removing this vital mandate will undermine not only the UN but Ireland’s highly respected and supported neutrality and our cherished UN blue helmets peacekeeping tradition.
The Taoiseach himself in 2013 stated that the triple lock was “the core of our neutrality”. So far, 13 county councils – with voters from all parties – have passed motions supporting the retention of the triple lock. Should not our TDs be given the same opportunity to truly reflect the popular will on this crucial issue? – Yours, etc,
