According to Economy Online, in order to deal with the destructive phenomenon of unauthorized mining of cryptocurrency, which puts additional pressure on the electricity distribution network, the Big Tehran Electricity Distribution Company announced the determination of cash rewards of up to 300 million tomans for whistleblowers. This action was taken with the aim of attracting public participation and maintaining the stability of the electricity grid, and the officials emphasize that all the information of the reporters will remain completely confidential.
Incentive policy to identify illegal cryptocurrency farms
The CEO of Greater Tehran Electricity Distribution Company, pointing to the importance of citizens’ participation in identifying illegal mining centers, announced that based on existing guidelines, people’s reports will be rewarded. These bonuses, whose amount varies depending on the number and capacity of the cryptocurrency mining devices discovered, start from a minimum of 3 million tomans and can be paid up to 300 million tomans for large cases.
He further emphasized the safety of the reporters and noted: “The identity of all the people who participate in this project remains completely confidential and there is no need to worry about the disclosure of their personal information.”
Record of fight against illegal mining of cryptocurrency in Tehran
Unauthorized use of electricity to mine digital currency, in addition to causing severe fluctuations in the network and reducing the quality of electricity supply, causes significant damage to national infrastructure. In another part of his speech, the CEO of the Tehran Electricity Distribution Company mentioned operational statistics and added: “Over the past few years, more than 25,000 illegal cryptocurrency mining machines (miners) have been identified and collected in Tehran metropolis.”
