The “Freedom Ship” project, which pushes the limits of maritime transportation, architecture and futuristic city planning, started to attract the attention of international aviation, engineering and maritime circles after a long period of silence.
The project, which could radically change the concept of life and travel at sea if implemented, promises its residents a full-fledged infrastructure where they can continue their daily lives without the need for land.
It will accommodate a medium-sized city population
Designed as a floating city, unlike classic cruise ships, Freedom Ship is a building concept with a length of approximately 1.6 to 1.8 kilometers and a width of 240 meters. This structure, which is several times larger than today’s largest modern cruise ships, is expected to consist of 30 decks and reach a height of approximately 100 meters.
According to the designers’ assumptions, approximately 80 thousand people will be able to be on the ship at the same time, which is equivalent to the population of a medium-sized city. In the project planning, it is stated that 50 thousand of this population will reside permanently on the ship, 10 thousand people will stay as guests and 20 thousand people will serve as crew.
Eliminates the need for infrastructure
Freedom Ship was planned to provide residents with access to daily services, eliminating the need to go ashore frequently. Within the scope of the project, on the ship; There are hospitals, schools, universities, banks, offices, museums, libraries and large recreation areas.
Social facilities include restaurants, hotel complexes, congress center, parks, aquarium and aquapark. Additionally, the construction of a stadium with a capacity of 15 thousand spectators within the building is also among the plans. Transportation within this huge structure will be provided by a special internal transportation system connecting different functional areas.
The construction process will take place offshore
The technical scale of the project makes its implementation logistically and technologically complex. Engineers point out that today there is no shipyard with the capacity to build a structure of this size in a single place. In this direction, it is aimed to produce the ship’s hull modularly in different regions and then assemble the parts in the open sea.
While the estimated cost of the project is calculated at approximately $16 billion, its creators state that potential partners have shown interest in the project, but financing has not yet been fully secured.
One of the most discussed elements of the developed concept is the plan to use a nuclear propulsion system. This system is intended to allow the structure weighing millions of tons to navigate for many years without refueling. However, experts emphasize that this situation requires important regulations in terms of international security procedures, nuclear protection legislation and legal permits.
Due to its size, the Freedom Ship will not be able to dock in most existing ports in the world. For this reason, land transportation and logistics support will be carried out through helicopters and private ferries that will use the runways on the top deck. Although the project is currently considered a futuristic concept, if it is implemented it will be the largest floating structure made by human hands.
