KOTA KINABALU (April 15): A fishmonger charged with the murder and dismemberment of a woman has been ordered by the Magistrates’ Court here to undergo 30 days of mental observation at a hospital.
Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus granted the order for 71-year-old Piluta Samad to be placed at Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang following an application by the defence.
Counsel for the accused submitted that, based on interviews, observations, and the accused’s words and conduct, there was a need for a mental evaluation for a period of 30 days, or longer if necessary.
The court was also informed that Piluta is a heart patient and is on medication for his condition.
Deputy public prosecutor Kareena Kaur Gill Karamjit Singh, meanwhile, requested a one-month adjournment as the prosecution is still awaiting the chemist’s and post-mortem reports.
The court fixed May 15 for re-mention of the case, pending submission of all reports, including the accused’s psychiatric assessment.
Piluta was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code with the murder of Hamidah Husin, also known as Lisa, 44, at an unnumbered house in Kampung Sri Kenangan along Jalan Sepanggar between 6pm and 7pm on Feb 11, 2026.
The victim’s body was later found at a communal rubbish bin in Indah Permai, Sepanggar on Feb 12.
Piluta, believed to be the woman’s fiance, was arrested on the same day.
Section 302 provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of up to 40 years, and if the death penalty is not imposed, whipping of up to 12 strokes upon conviction.
The accused was represented by counsels Datuk Ram Singh, Joan Goh, Ian Vun, and Prem Elmer Ganasan.
