He Democratic National Committee (DNC) Resolutions Committee unanimously approved a resolution supporting the democratic transition in Venezuela and promotes protection measures for Venezuelan migrants in the United States.
The vote took place during the party’s summer meeting in San Francisco, California, and represents a political position that combines demands on the internal Venezuelan situation with calls for US immigration policy.
He documententitled Resolution to Strongly Support Efforts for the Return of Democracy to Venezuela and Assist Venezuelan Migrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), It was promoted by Hispanic Democratic leaders, including Tom Pérez, Leopoldo Martínez and Samuel Vilchez Santiago.
Demands on the democratic transition in Venezuela
The resolution establishes a series of demands aimed at promoting a democratic transition in the country. Among them stands out the demand for immediate and transparent release of all political prisoners.
It also proposes the dismantling of the legal, institutional and military apparatus which – according to the text – has been used to commit serious violations of human rights.
Another central point is the establishment of a binding schedule, with international verification, for the holding of free, fair and multiparty elections.
The DNC maintains in the document that “a free, sovereign and democratic Venezuela is a moral imperative,” thus reinforcing its position in the face of the Venezuelan political crisis.
Protection for Venezuelan migrants
In addition to the political focus, the resolution includes a direct call to the United States government to grant immediate immigration relief to Venezuelans residing in the country.
It recognizes that the causes that drove migration – such as political persecution, the humanitarian crisis and the lack of a democratic transition – persist without a solution.
The party is committed to promoting actions from those in power, including Congress, state legislatures, governorships and mayors’ offices, to guarantee immigration protection and avoid deportations of Venezuelans in a vulnerable or undocumented situation.
After its approval in the Resolutions Committee, the document will be put to a vote in the plenary session of the Democratic Party, scheduled for Saturday, August 24.
If ratified, the resolution would consolidate a formal political line of the party around Venezuela, with emphasis on the democratic transition and the defense of the rights of Venezuelan migrants in US territory.
