The president of United States, donald trumpopened the possibility that a new round of negotiations with the Iran take place in Pakistan later this week, according to the American newspaper NY Post. The first round failed on Saturday (11).
In two brief telephone interviews with the newspaper’s correspondent in Islamabad, Trump said that “she should stay (in the Pakistani capital), really, because something could happen there in the next two days, and we are more inclined to go (to Pakistan).” Trump also praised Marshal Asim Munir, a key figure in Washington’s relationship with Islamabad.
The first round, led on the American side by Vice President JD Vance, failed after a meeting lasting more than 20 hours in the Pakistani capital, and it is still unclear when and how new talks should actually take place. Tehran has not yet commented on Trump’s statements, who has not officially spoken about the possibility.
This Monday (13), Trump had said he did not care whether or not there would be new negotiations, opening a window to leave the conflict frozen. Afterwards, he stated that the Iranians returned to the US to talk, which was not confirmed by their rivals. And now it opens the possibility of a new round in the coming days.
Vance made a brief statement to the press at an Islamabad hotel after the first round. “We will return to the US without an agreement. We made it very clear what our limits were, what we could give in and what we could not, and they chose not to accept our terms,” he said.
Vance’s speech at the time contradicted previous statements by the Iranian delegation, which said it expected more discussions on Sunday. After the American vice president’s interview, however, the Persian country’s state TV confirmed the end of the negotiations, blaming the failure on “excessive demands” from the US.
The uncertain future of the ceasefire between the parties, which arrives this Tuesday (14) halfway through the initial two weeks, overlaps with the tension in the Strait of Hormuz with an American blockade of ships in the maritime route, until then blocked only by Tehran.
One of several impasses on the table It also involves the enrichment of uranium in Iran. People familiar with the negotiations, according to The New York Times, say that the US proposed the suspension of any enrichment of nuclear material for 20 years — Iran responded with a counter-proposal of five years, not accepted by Washington, otherwise similar to the Iranian position in talks before the war.
Asked by the NY Post about the proposal involving the suspension of Iranian nuclear enrichment, Trump reportedly said he “doesn’t want them to feel like they won,” according to the newspaper.
