PARAMARIBO – Immediately after his swearing-in and installation on Friday by President Jennifer Simons, new police chief Melvin Pinas set out a clear course where he wants to take the Suriname Police Force. In his speech he emphasized that the force must develop into a modern, professional and future-oriented organization, with integrity and trust as a foundation.

“I don’t promise miracles. Because working on safety is not a sprint, but a process of consistent, thoughtful and professional effort in which innovation, good governance and integrity come together,” said Pinas. What he does promise “is a clear course of responsibility and a future-oriented approach”.

    Challenges

According to Pinas, the police face major challenges. Crime is becoming increasingly complex and international, while technological developments and digital threats place new demands on investigation and enforcement. At the same time, there is declining confidence among citizens in the police. “Trust does not come naturally. We have to earn it,” said the chief of police, who called on police officers to demonstrate exemplary behavior, professionalism and visibility in society.

He indicated that traditional working methods are no longer sufficient and that the force must focus more on innovation, data-driven work and strategic forward thinking. The focus is on eight core areas, including integrity, crime control, operational reinforcement, crisis management and cybercrime.

    Priority

Tackling organized and cross-border crime is a priority, as is increasing police presence in both urban areas and inland areas. Pinas also pointed out the new safety issues associated with the emerging oil and gas sector, which require targeted and professional efforts.

Within the organization itself, more attention will be paid to the well-being of police employees, better working conditions and further professionalization. Investments in training, specialization and modern resources such as drones, body cameras and bulletproof vests should contribute to a more effective and safer performance of police work.

    Making the force more effective

At operational level, the chief of police wants to improve response times, increase the resolution rate and tackle traffic problems in a more targeted manner. In addition, efforts are being made to strengthen neighborhood management to restore ties with society.

Pinas also underlined the importance of preparing for crisis situations and increasing the digital resilience of the force. Cybercrime will form a structural part of the security strategy, in which the protection of sensitive information and the strengthening of digital capacity are central.

    Collaboration is important

According to the chief of police, cooperation remains crucial. He announced that he would further intensify ties with national and international partners, including the Public Prosecution Service, the National Army and Interpol.

In his conclusion, Pinas addressed society with the call to take joint responsibility for safety. “The police are of and for society. Together we must build trust and a safe Suriname,” said the police chief.
