PARAMARIBO – Staatsolie and the Tax Authorities of Suriname have started a three-year program to strengthen the knowledge and skills of tax and customs officials in the oil and gas sector. Both organizations signed the cooperation document on Friday that forms the basis for this process.
Investing in government capacity
With the Capacity Strengthening Program, Staatsolie wants to make a targeted contribution to a stronger government, so that revenues from oil and gas can be carefully managed and used for the development of Suriname. The rapidly growing offshore sector offers great economic opportunities, but also places high demands on supervision and regulations.
The oil and gas sector is technically complex and constantly developing. Up-to-date and specialized knowledge is necessary to correctly implement taxation and provide effective supervision. The program responds to this by better equipping the Tax Authorities and Customs.
Training and international knowledge exchange
Within the program, tax officials involved in taxation and control in the sector, as well as customs officials who monitor import and export flows, are intensively trained. The focus is on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
The process will be carried out in phases over a period of three years. The training courses largely take place in Suriname and are supplemented with international knowledge exchange where necessary.
Staatsolie anniversary project
The Tax Authorities Capacity Strengthening Program 2025-2028 is part of the activities surrounding Staatsolie’s 45th anniversary in December 2025. This is done under the motto “empowering communities and institutions”.
With this initiative, Staatsolie not only wants to strengthen the sector, but also contribute to a sustainable and stable future for Suriname.
