The protected areas office was installed in Pedernales, with the objective of strengthening this system for this province that includes the Sierra de Bahoruco park, Bahía de las Águilas, “Jaragua” Park, Laguna de Oviedo el Muelle.
Vice Minister Carlos Batista told LISTÍN DIARIO that the installation of the new office responds to the coordination of a protected areas project, with the objective also of strengthening the management of the “National System of Protected Areas.”
He said that the office will be managed by Cesar Peralta, current director of the “José Francisco Peña Gómez” District Board, adding that it will have 55 park rangers between the provinces of Independencia and Pedernales, with two offices on the northern slope and another in Puerto Escondido de Duverge, with 20 park rangers.
Governor Edirda De Oleo Peña was present at the activity, who has received instructions on the plans from the point of view of tourism development, which is in process in the Jaragua National Park, Sierra de Bahoruco and the Bahía de las Águilas area.
When asked about the Pedernales lands, she said that these lands are duly titled, duly respecting the lands of protected areas.
According to the official, this development will extend to other territories, the beaches of Bahía de las Águilas being a protected area.
He argued that as a Dominican State we must plan to be able to receive tourists adequately on the beaches of Bahía de las Águilas, which has its limitations because it is a protected area.
