The Comptroller General of the Republic denies having broken into the Public Ministry or interfered with its ongoing investigations.
“At no time have officials of the Comptroller’s Office, nor the Comptroller, intervened in proceedings of the Public Ministry or interfered in ongoing investigations,” the institution stated in a statement on the afternoon of this Friday, April 10. “The institution has acted consistently, with absolute respect for the powers of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, as evidenced by the 365 audits carried out and the duly substantiated complaints that have been sent to the corresponding authorities,” he added.
On Thursday night, the Public Ministry announced that a criminal investigation had been initiated after officials from the Comptroller’s Office burst into an investigation involving the institution’s auditors, preventing it from being completed.
The Public Ministry detailed that it was the investigation of former vice president José Gabriel for the crime of unjustified enrichment.
The Comptroller’s Office, for its part, justified the actions of comptroller Anel Flores. “The presence of the Comptroller at the Prosecutor’s Office facilities responded exclusively to the need to know the situation of the institution’s auditors who were being interviewed for a prolonged period, greater than eight hours, within the framework of actions that generated concern about the scope and form of said proceedings,” the statement detailed.
The statement adds that it is important to guarantee that public servants who carry out oversight tasks can carry out their functions “without generating interpretations that affect their technical work.”
