Meetings in Cotroceni for the formation of a new majority
The announcement of the collaboration between PNL and USR comes on the day when President Nicușor Dan started the informal consultations at the Cotroceni Palace.
Interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan arrived in Cotroceni on Thursday evening for talks with the head of state, amid negotiations on the future governing formula. According to some political sources, the president would support the restoration of the former coalition made up of PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR.
The day before, USR leader Dominic Fritz also had a meeting with Nicușor Dan. Sources close to the discussions claim that the meeting had more the role of a preliminary consultation, without concrete negotiations. However, USR’s position would have remained unchanged. According to some sources from the party, the formation continues to reject the option of a new government majority alongside the PSD, a decision recently validated in the party’s Political Committee.
Within the PNL, tensions over leaving the government continue. In a message sent to party members and published on Facebook, Ilie Bolojan described the decision to go into opposition as a “reset time” for liberals.
He believes that the decision of the party leadership has returned the “self-respect” to the PNL, necessary to regain the trust of the electorate.
At the same time, the liberal leadership is considering the organization of an extraordinary congress, which would clarify the direction of the party after the PSD split.
In the next period, President Nicușor Dan will continue consultations with the parliamentary parties before the official negotiations for the appointment of a new prime minister.
The political crisis was triggered by the adoption of the censure motion submitted by PSD and AUR, which passed with 281 votes “for”, out of 288 MPs present.
The government led by Ilie Bolojan was thus dismissedbut will remain interim until the formation of a new executive.
President Nicușor Dan informal consultations with the leaders of the governing parties began on Wednesday, May 6.
