We are not experiencing a shortage today fuel said on Monday Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeadis, noting that there is preliminary work and the data available in Cyprus regarding the matter are being recorded.
In his statements on the sidelines of the meeting of the Executive Committee of the European Transport Federation at the SEK Building in Nicosia, and invited to comment on the issue of fuel sufficiency that has arisen, Mr. Vafeadis referred to the set of tools announced by the European Commission which is expected to help member states manage such a crisis. “I think we’re in a position where we need to be aware of what’s going on, to have good coordination with the member states, with the European Commission, so that if things develop into something more unfavorable, we can take our measures.”
When asked about the measures being taken in Cyprus on the matter, he said that “there is a preliminary process at a strategic level, a recording of all the data that exists in Cyprus. Cyprus is in a more unfavorable position compared to Central Europe”, referring to the country’s lack of connection with other Central European countries. “We are an island state. We depend on aviation and shipping. So we have to manage it with that in mind.” he reported.
He said that the development of situations in the Middle East is unpredictable. “This has thus created some problems in the fuel supply chain, we are dutifully monitoring the situation, just so that we can take timely, if we can take the appropriate measures, take them. That is why the informal Council of Ministers took place last Tuesday at the European level, we have discussed the issue, we have come up with some ideas”, he said.
The marina project is progressing immediately
In relation to the statements of the mayor of Larnaca Andreas Vyra about the port and marina of Larnaca, the Minister of Transport specifically said that “I had discussed other things with Mr. Vyra” adding that they had agreed that “the issue will follow a specific implementation path and that at the end of the month they would present the results of the study regarding land development”.
He added that they would then give two months to complete the study. As the Minister said, “Mr. Vyras decided on a different path. We will continue to work in this direction, which we had agreed upon. I believe that what we said continues to apply.” He also said that they will continue to deliver results so that they can move forward with the implementation of the project.
“Although Mr. Vyras seems to disagree, I insist that we should not wait for all the studies to be finished to start the projects, which is not disputed.”
No one doubts, he continued, that the work on the marina can proceed even today and expressed the concern “why should I wait all this time and lose another two, three months for the marina? Why not start immediately’? He noted that instructions have been given to the Ports Authority to start the consultation, for the implementation of the project.
“Our job is to move it forward and this is the intention of the Government, to move it forward. And if there has been a delay in this study, that burden is mine, I realize. I apologize to Larnaca, but this does not mean that we have the right to delay this work any longer.”
He also expressed the position that the Government will proceed with the marina, “to show the people of Larnaca that we are moving forward and not to create delays, which may set us back two, three months for this project. I am not saying that land developments or studies for land developments should not be completed, but for the marina why should we wait”? he said finally.
