According to Switzerland, Russia remains the biggest threat to security, stability and peace in Europe, and its goals go far beyond Ukraine.
In the annual report on security in the Alpine country and in the world, which is based on the analysis of the Swiss intelligence service NDB, the Swiss government stated this today. According to her, the security situation in the country has worsened significantly in recent years and last year.
“(Russia) wants to restore its influence in Eastern Europe and as a global actor and also to establish itself as a great power,” states the Swiss cabinet, according to which Moscow is conducting a broadly conceived and long-term conflict against the West through hybrid means. Moreover, according to Bern, this conflict is intensifying and Russia is using, for example, sabotage, influence activities, propaganda or disinformation.
“Switzerland is directly affected primarily by cyber-attacks, illicit intelligence activities, proliferation efforts, as well as influence activities and disinformation,” the report also said, according to which Moscow has developed complex strategies to circumvent sanctions imposed on it by Western countries.
The material goes on to write about Russia’s revisionist intentions, its military economy, massive armaments and threats to Europe.
At the same time, the Swiss government points out that since the administration of US President Donald Trump took office last year, it is not certain that the United States will continue to stand up for the security and defense of Europe. Although many European countries are now trying to strengthen the continent’s defenses, it is not certain that this will be enough for deterrence and the ability to defend itself.
In other parts of the document, the Swiss government draws attention, among other things, to the danger of terrorism, which, according to it, continues to come primarily from jihadists, and above all from individuals or smaller groups that could commit attacks on civilians using simple means.
