Around 70 Catholics, from the most different dioceses in the country, signed an open letter expressing “perplexity and indignation” at the way in which the Catholic Church in Portugal, and in particular the Portuguese Episcopal Conference (CEP), has dealt with the entire situation of sexual abuse. They dispute the language used, the way in which the compensation process was directed and the way in which the bishops decided to reduce the amounts to be awarded to the victims. “A disaster”, they say, accusing the bishops of “lack of empathy”. They promise they won’t keep quiet.
