Former French Prime Minister Michel Barnier addressed the Monaco Mediterranean Foundation, offering a wide-ranging analysis of Europe’s role on the global stage and the challenges facing France ahead of the 2027 presidential election…
Drawing on his experience as the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, he emphasised that while the European Union has developed strong economic and financial tools, it still lacks the full attributes of global political power, particularly in defence and foreign policy.
Barnier highlighted the importance of unity, noting that recent crises—from the financial downturn and Covid-19 to Brexit and the war in Ukraine—have tested the resilience of the EU. In his view, the ability of member states to act collectively has been key, but future challenges will require deeper coordination and a clearer strategic vision.
He also underlined the need to balance European integration with national identity, arguing that unity should not come at the expense of cultural and political diversity. Turning to France, Barnier stressed that restoring economic stability and political coherence will be essential for the country to regain influence within Europe.
Looking ahead, he described the 2027 presidential election as a crucial moment that could shape both France’s direction and its role in a stronger, more autonomous Europe capable of asserting itself globally.
