On the eve of the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, we witnessed the complete and planned demolition of the Holy Mother of God Cathedral in the heart of Stepanakert, seized by Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijan is using the same barbaric means that the Turks used more than a century ago to exterminate the Armenian nation. This process began with pogroms organized against Armenians in the Soviet years in Sumkayit, Kirovapat, Paku, Maragha, Shahumian and other places. The 2020 Artsakh war showed that Azerbaijan will make every effort to destroy Artsakh and its population. The war was followed by the complete blockade of Artsakh, which ultimately led to the forced and complete displacement of the Armenian population of Artsakh.
These acts of violence, born out of the state policy of deep-rooted intolerance and hatred towards Armenians, took place at a time when the international community only assumed the role of an observer, content with statements expressing “deep concern” and indirect condemnations, which gave Azerbaijan the opportunity to realize its goals with impunity.
Today, the same world powers talk about peace, without addressing the injustices of the past that remain unpunished and their consequences.
However, the position of the Armenian authorities towards these realities is more worrying. They are so convinced that they can bring a new era of peace to Armenia that Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s administration has initiated a dangerous campaign of denial to please those who are supposedly seeking peace, while in reality their goal is to pursue new economic opportunities for their own benefit.
Pashinia began to talk about the events of 1915 using the term “Great War” and even suggested to re-examine the history and causes of the Armenian Genocide. Such steps harm the struggle and efforts that lasted nearly a century, which contributed to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, which is the first step to ensure justice for the victims of the Genocide and their families.
Pashinyan also declares that the liberation movement of Artsakh, which not only restored the historical lands of Artsakh, but also to a certain extent accelerated the independence of Armenia in 1991, should no longer be continued, because it could provoke a war. This means that the leaders of Armenia have almost abandoned the ideas of self-determination, justice and human rights.
The government of Armenia thinks that by ignoring history, it is erasing the past and creating an Armenia with a brighter future, free from the burden of historical injustices. Pashinian believes that by not referring to the past, he is erasing the historical reality that Armenians have been subjected to unspeakable crimes in the course of modern history.
