Many people wake up and find themselves asking themselves: What did their dreams really mean? Sometimes they are clear and memorable, other times they fade away before we can realize them. But dreams are not just random images. They often reflect our inner experiences, emotions and experiences from everyday life.
During sleep, the brain processes information that we have experienced during the day. What troubles us, pleases or stresses us can be reflected in dreams in various symbolic ways. That is why we often wake up with the feeling that dreams have a deeper meaning, even if we do not fully understand them. Scientists agree that several factors influence the content of dreams.
Dreams have a clear meaning
According to scientists, the idea that dreams are just random images without meaning is not true. Research from the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca published in Communications Psychology shows that dreams are closely connected with how we think, what we feel and what we experience, they also write on the portal Euronews.
287 people between the ages of 18 and 70 participated in the study. During two weeks, they wrote down their dreams and ordinary daily experiences. At the same time, scientists monitored their sleep, personality and psychological state. Subsequently, with the help of artificial intelligence, they analyzed how the participants described their experiences.
The findings showed a clear picture, that dreams have patterns. People who jump from thought to thought during the day also have more chaotic dreams. Conversely, those who perceive dreams as meaningful experience them more intensely. Dreams are also affected by the environment, for example during the COVID-19 pandemic they were more often stronger and related to isolation. When the situation calmed down, the content of the dreams also changed.
Dreams transform reality in the mind
Although dreams are based on everyday life, they do not reproduce it literally. Common places, such as work, school or hospital, appear in them rather in an altered form. They are often mixed up, connected with other situations and create strange, sometimes even surreal scenarios. It is this transformation of reality that indicates that the brain actively works with what we experience during dreaming and transforms it into new contexts.
According to the lead author of the research, Valentina Elce, dreams do not function as a simple record of the past. Rather, it is a dynamic process that reflects our personality, current experience and internal setting. In other words, dreams don’t happen by chance, they are shaped by who we are and what we are experiencing.
Modern technology also plays an important role in research. Thanks to natural language processing, artificial intelligence can evaluate dream descriptions almost as accurately as humans. This opens up new possibilities in the study of consciousness, memory or mental health.
Although we do not have complete control over what we dream, it is becoming increasingly clear that dreams are influenced by specific factors, not only the environment around us, but also our own minds.
