This year, Split also celebrated the International Labor Day at Marjan, where the traditional distribution of beans was held with an entertainment program and a large turnout of citizens. Sunny weather and a day off, a perfect prelude to an extended weekend, were used by many people from Split to spend time in nature, so the Marjan lookout was already filled with visitors of all generations from the morning hours.
The program started at 10:30 a.m. with the children’s program “Bajkaonica”, which brought together the youngest and their parents. At 11:30 a.m., the distribution of free portions of beans began, and the interest of citizens was expected to be high. Even before the start, a long line formed, but the wait did not spoil the mood of the crowd.
Mayor Tomislav Šuta and pronoun Matea Dorčićwith the help of the Student Center staff, the director of the Public Institution for the Management of the Marjan Forest Park Jakša Božanić and city councilors, this year they distributed portions of beans to the citizens. Beans with sausages and pancetta were prepared by the Student Center workers, who had been cooking since early morning.
This year, 2,500 portions of one of today’s protective symbols were distributed. At exactly noon, the musical part of the program followed the performance Bakes and Silva. To make getting to Marjan as easy as possible, a special free bus line is organized for citizens throughout the day. We also talked to the gathered people from Split, many of whom pointed out that they have not missed this tradition for years and that it is events like this that give the city a special touch.
– I used to be a regular, but I haven’t come in recent years. This year is the best for me – Mustafa told us.
– I’m enjoying it, the beans are great! This is my first time on Marjan and I’m really happy about it. I was born here, but I spent most of my life in Virovitica – Mr. Janko revealed to us.
– They spared no expense, everyone around me agrees that it is very tasty. We are there every year, but usually we come later and we don’t manage to grab the portions, that’s why we are early this year. This is a tradition that should be nurtured – claims the young fellow citizen.
We also met the cheerful Mrs. Sofija, who, as always, was happy to make a statement:
– I never eat beans, I come and take just one pinch. You can’t get in line, it’s always crowded and now you have a kilometer long queue. Everyone is really hungry, you can see that they are elderly, infirm people. It’s nice, tradition should not be forgotten, it should be maintained while it lasts for the world and the people, Split and us – says Sofija.
– Ever since I can remember, I have always come to Marjan, I am a child of Varoš. My parents taught me – they know where we are for Labor Day! Marjan is the heart and lungs of the city – friends Jadranka and Dinka unanimously concluded.
– I have been living in Split for 40 years, but this is the first time I have come to the fažol. It is excellent, kudos to the chefs. I’m sorry that it took me so long to come, I wish there were more opportunities like this – a fellow citizen shared her opinion.
