The incident occurred on Grimmaische Strasse, a shopping street. Leipzig’s mayor Burkhard Jung and the Saxony police initially said that there were two dead. A police spokesman corrects this number and speaks of one fatality. There are also two seriously injured people and around 20 other “affected people,” writes MDR. The driver of the vehicle was arrested, the police reported on X.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver was traveling at 70 to 80 km/h, reports MDR. Meanwhile, a female person is said to have been on the windshield of the car.
Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) assumes that the tragic events in Leipzig were a suspected “shooting spree”, writes Focus. The alleged perpetrator is a young man who is “mentally abnormal” and a “German citizen”. (hkl/watson)
