Donald Trump’s photo will soon appear on some US passports, in a limited edition to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence this year, confirmed the State Department on Tuesday.
A Fox News article, shared by a State Department spokesperson, showed a passport image of Trump superimposed over the Declaration of Independence, with his signature below.
“As the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary in July, the State Department prepares to issue a limited number of US passports specially designed to commemorate this historic occasion,” said State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott.
There is little modern precedent in the world, let alone in a democracy, for photos of sitting leaders appearing in passports, as most countries prefer to depict historical or nature images.
Current US passports show various scenes from the country’s history, such as the moon landing, along with historical sites or monuments such as the Statue of Liberty.
Since he returned to office in 2025, several government buildings in Washington have posted banners with Trump’s image, which he also imposed his name to the Kennedy Center of performing arts and the dismantled United States Institute of Peace.
Last month, the Treasury Department said Trump’s signature would begin appearing on dollar bills, in another unprecedented development.
The Fox News article said that Trump-themed passports would only be issued in Washington and would stop being issued when their availability ran out.
