PARAMARIBO — The police arrested ten suspects in Meerzorg, Commewijne, who were allegedly involved in the illegal loading of goods from a vessel. This concerns nine Brazilian suspects and one Surinamese.
The arrests took place on Friday during an action by police officers from the Maritime department. The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects had loaded goods from a vessel and then placed them on a jetty.
During the inspection, law enforcement officers asked for documents relating to the vessel and its crew members, but these could not be provided. One of the suspects also stated that the goods did not belong to them.
The suspects were then transferred to the Maritime department for further investigation. Both the vessel and the goods were seized by the police. The further investigation into this case has now been transferred to the Fraud department.
After consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, the Surinamese, SR (36), was sent away. The other suspects – MB (44), GD (42), RD (57), RW (42), DR (34), DB (42), DP (53), MD (33) and DJ (61) – all of Brazilian nationality, have been taken into custody pending the investigation.
