A man in his forties was arrested in Austria after rat poison was found in baby food from HiPP. The director of the company says that the man sent a demand for a large amount of money to an email address that is only checked every two weeks.
Two weeks ago, HiPP recalled an entire product line of carrot and potato puree after rat poison was found in one of the jars. A total of five jars of poison were found in Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
One person is currently in police custody in connection with the case, but the police have not wanted to provide further information about the suspect.
British Broadcasting Corporation reports that an e-mail demanding two million euros was sent by HiPP staff. The director of the company says that according to the demand, the amount was to be paid within six days of the email being sent. However, the e-mail box in question is only checked every two to three weeks.
At least one jar is believed to still be in circulation and consumers are urged to look out for damaged or open lids, an unusual smell or a white sticker with a red circle on the bottom of the glass jar.
