Samu, the young Asian elephant, celebrated his birthday on Saturday at the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, where it was also announced that the five-year-old animal will be moved to the Veszprém Zoo in the near future.
The zoo noted that the actual birthday was on Friday, but the management scheduled the celebration for Saturday morning so that as many visitors as possible could attend the event.
Along with the birthday celebration, it was also announced that Samu will soon be leaving his “parental home” and will be moved to the Veszprém Zoo by the end of spring. This was announced on site by Endre Sós, director general of the Budapest Zoo, and László Török, managing director of the Veszprém Zoo.
The Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden has been caring for elephants since the 1870s. The first baby elephant in Budapest was born in 1930. Samu is the eighth baby elephant born in Budapest, and he is the third calf of his parents, Angele and Assam. At his most recent measuring, Samu weighed 1,802 kilograms.
