Las Palmas (Canaria), May 2, 2026 (SPS) – Yesterday, Friday, May 1, the city of Las Palmas witnessed widespread participation in the workers’ demonstration and march commemorating International Workers’ Day, where thousands of participants gathered to express their social and professional demands.
In the context of commemorating International Workers’ Day, Spanish trade unions on the island of Gran Canaria organized a massive march during which they raised slogans calling for respecting workers’ rights, improving working conditions and wages, ensuring respect for working hours, and ensuring that the working class enjoys all of its legitimate rights, in addition to expressing solidarity with struggling and oppressed peoples.
The Sahrawi issue recorded a remarkable presence during this demonstration, thanks to the efforts of the Canarian trade union coordination to support the Sahrawi people, and the Polisario Front office in Canaria.
A number of Sahrawi workers residing in Las Palmas also participated in the march, along with members of the Sahrawi community, and representatives of the Canarian Association for Friendship with the Sahrawi People, in addition to the presence of the representative of the Front in the region, Ali Salem Sidi El Zein, and his deputy, Mohamed Said, in addition to activists from the Canarian Solidarity Movement.
The participants raised Sahrawi national flags and banners demanding respect for the rights of Sahrawi workers, stressing the right of the Sahrawi people to freedom and independence, while emphasizing the strong bonds of solidarity between the Canary and Sahrawi peoples.
The presence of the Sahrawi issue was also evident in the various speeches of Spanish union officials and representatives who took turns on the podium during the closing festival, in addition to the statements of a number of Canarian solidarity activists who renewed their support for the struggle of the Sahrawi people and their just cause.
