In recent weeks, a recurring question has been why the former president wanted the role at all. «For the sheepskins and the pendulum, to be completely honest,» she said, referring to symbolic and ceremonial aspects. She added that she had not been aware of budgetary issues or inconsistencies with the Olympic Charter at the time she took the role.
Her reference to «sheepskins and the pendulum» alluded to habits of former EOC president Sõõrumaa – for example, during the 2024 Summer Olympics, some Estonian athletes reportedly found sheepskins placed under their beds in the Olympic Village.
Sõurumaa does not seek a comeback
Sõurumaa, who narrowly lost to Kaljulaid in the October 2024 election, said he was not satisfied with the situation and would have preferred her voluntary resignation. However, he does not plan to run again, emphasizing the need for multiple candidates.
According to Erki Nool and Märks, they already have a strong candidate in mind, although that person has not yet agreed to run.
Time is short: candidates must submit support signatures from 15 EOC members by May 21. Until the next general assembly on June 18, vice president Gerd Kanter will serve as acting president.
Kanter noted that the decision was largely personality-driven but also pointed to broader issues, particularly unclear roles within the organization.
